Every year, the Santa Clarita Public Library’s One Story One City program encourages discussion between residents and promotes reading and learning through the celebration of one story during the month of March. The Santa Clarita Public Library is excited to announce this year’s 2020 book selection is Gods of Jade and Shadow by award winning author Silvia Moreno-Garcia!
GODS OF JADE AND SHADOW
Gods of Jade and Shadow tells the story of Casiopea Tun, a woman who dreams of escaping her traditional life and longs for exciting new adventures. After stumbling upon her grandfather’s secret box, Casiopea unknowingly releases the Mayan God of Death, Hun-Kamé, who takes her on an adventure of a lifetime. Casiopea journeys through Mexico to the Mayan underworld, Xibalba, to help Hun-Kamé recover his throne and find her place in the world.
Inspired by the Popol Vuhl, this dark tale explores the complex relationship between ancient Maya mythology and traditional Mexican culture, what it means to be a modern woman in an era breaking free from tradition, and love, life and death.
Due to the nature of some of the topics covered in the book, this story is recommended for adults and not suitable for readers under the age of 16.
